How to Have Fun Without a Date
By Diana Vilibert
No date? No problem! Maybe your date bailed. Or maybe you're just not that into the guys at your high school. Whatever the reason, the homeroom chatter of dates and corsages is starting to make you queasy. If you're thinking of stuffing your dress in the back of your closet and spending prom night on the couch with Ben & Jerry, it's time for a reality check. Find out how to make your prom night special without a date!
GET EXCITED Stop moping around and whining that you're dateless. If you feel sorry for yourself, so will everyone else! Instead, remind yourself of all the fun you'll have without a date: You can have lots of dance partners, you can wear towering high heels, and you can do whatever you want post-prom! Next time someone asks who you're going with, just tell them you're going alone — and that you can't wait to have a blast!
MAKE IT A GIRLS' NIGHT OUT Gather up a bunch of your single girlfriends and make a pact to go as a group instead of scrambling to go with a guy who you're not that crazy about anyway. Make an entire weekend out of it! Have a movie night full of prom flicks the night before, followed by a group mani-pedi and hairstyle session the day of the dance.
GET SET UP Think prom is the worst possible night to have a blind date? Think again. Have a friend who knows your taste in guys to ask her date to bring a friend. Even if he's not your Prince Charming, chances are that a guy open to being set up will be a fun, laid-back date!
ARRIVE FASHIONABLY LATE If you're dreading the solo red carpet walk past your classmates, take your time and arrive late! Head in a half hour past the official start time and you can slip in unnoticed while everyone is warming up on the dance floor. Chances are, by that time your girlfriends will have given up on trying to make their dates dance anyway!
HAVE A SINGLES MIXER It might not seem like it, but you're not the only one at your high school who's facing prom sans date. Take the initiative to post a note on Facebook inviting guys and girls not paired off to go together as a group. Who knows, you might even inspire a love connection — maybe even your own! Remember, regardless of your date situation (or lack of one), the best prom accessory you can wear is a confident smile!
