The Greatest Prom Moments of All Time

By Alison Marx

As prom nears, so does the end of the school year, and you know what that means — yearbooks and senior superlatives! We've come up with a little prom yearbook of our own. Here are some of the greatest prom moments of all time in movies and on TV.

Most Romantic
Show: Saved by the Bell
The Plot: Sweethearts Kelly and Zack plan to attend prom together when Kelly's dad suddenly loses his job. Kelly can't afford a dress, so Zack plans a special prom just for her. What do you get when you combine a candlelit picnic under the stars with your own personal dance floor alfresco? The most romantic prom.

Most Retro
Movie: Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
The Plot: Napoleon, the class oddball, feels super confident when he shows up at prom in his polyester suit (complete with matching vest) and a popular girl on his arm. Unfortunately, his superficial date ditches him minutes after they arrive. Gosh! But when the disco ball drops, Napoleon snags a dance with the right girl.

Biggest Disaster
Movie: Carrie(1976)
The Plot: As the school outcast, Carrie does not make friends easily. Classmates taunt her and humiliate her at the prom (they pour pig's blood on her, yuck!). With her powers to move things with her mind, she wreaks havoc at the prom, taking revenge on her peers and teachers. Let's just say it's a fiery ending.

Most Supernatural
Show: Smallville
The Plot: Prom queen candidate Dawn gets into a nasty car accident before the big night. Determined to win the crown, her spirit goes on a possession rampage, jumping from girl to girl. She finally gets her way when she enters the body of prom queen winner Chloe. Now that's school spirit!

Best Dancing
Movie: She’s All That (1999)
The Plot: Laney is an artsy introvert turned superhot prom queen nominee. The night heats up when the seniors shimmy and shake their way through a choreographed dance. After challenging the most popular girl in school on the dance floor, Laney battles her for the coveted title in the closest vote ever. You go, girl!

Most Likely to Save the World
Movie: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)
The Plot: Buffy is your typical teenager — except that she fights demons and vampires when she should be doing homework. And you guessed it: The evil guys show up just in time to terrorize the prom! With the help of her sidekick (the town rebel), Buffy becomes the heroine of the night — puffy dress, combat boots, and all.

Most Likely to Succeed
Movie: Footloose (1984)
The Plot: Ren, a city boy, moves to a small town with strict rules — "No dancing" is one of them. He can"t fight his urge to dance, so he fights the town instead. At first, his efforts seem hopeless, but his determination pays off. Ren and his classmates celebrate at prom by dancing all night long!

Most Scandalous
Movie: Never Been Kissed (1999)
The Plot: Josie, a geeky 25-year-old reporter, goes undercover at a local high school. A group of nerds befriends her immediately, but Josie ends up joining the "in" crowd. At the prom, the popular beauties scheme to humiliate the nerds, but Josie steps in. She defends them and reveals her true identity, breaking the heart of a dreamy English teacher who had fallen in love with her.

Best Girl Power
Movie: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
The Plot: Bianca desperately wants to go to prom with senior hottie Joey, who only wants one thing: to go all the way. Bianca then learns that Joey broke her sister's heart in the past. When Bianca shows up with another guy, Joey knocks him to the ground. Defending her sister, her date, and herself, Bianca leaves Joey with a broken nose!

Most Anti-Prom
Show: Dawson's Creek
The Plot: It's always complicated with Dawson and Joey, especially when it comes to prom. At least Jack knows who he's taking: Ethan. But when he tries to buy tickets, he is denied and ridiculed in front of everyone. Poor Jack? Not at all! His friends come to the rescue by throwing their very own prom.
