Ryan Sheckler Talks Prom
Ryan Sheckler has skateboarded his way into your heart. This 18-year-old competes around the world as a professional skateboarder, but when he's back at home, he's just a normal, sensitive guy trying to figure girls out. Last year, Ryan tagged along at the senior prom. Let's get the juicy details!
So Ryan, tell us about your prom.
I actually went to my first prom last year and it was sick. It was exactly everything I expected it to be. I was a junior and we went with the whole senior class. We had a double-decker Red Bull bus [Red Bull is one of Ryan's skateboarding sponsors] that they had flown in from Paris so it was a pretty insane experience.
Who did you bring as your date? Was it a girlfriend or a friend?
It was just a friend. It was a girl that I'd known for a while. I asked her. That was my first time going to prom, so I didn't really know how to ask a girl. So I started asking for ideas and no one really knew what to do, so I went to the store and bought 300 pink, white, and yellow balloons and I wrote "prom" with a question mark on every single one. I put them in her room so when she got home she couldn't even move in her room. It was just all balloons with "prom" on it.
What was her reaction?
She just called me so frantic and so excited to go, and it was one of those things that you put so much time into, and then when you get a good reaction out of it, it just makes you feel that much better.
Well, you were very creative. So our readers are always looking for advice, especially from guys on whether they should have the guts to ask a guy out or should they send certain signals to the guy?
I think it's cool. It catches guys off guard when a girl asks a guy out. I don't think it's wrong. I'm actually a big fan of it. I think it's actually really sick and it's happened to me once before and I was caught so off guard by it, because I was like, "Wait...Aren't I supposed to do that?"
What were your pre-prom plans?
It was at a public park called Pines Park in San Clemente and we just went there. It looks over the ocean and it's a really cool place.
What was the dancing like at the prom? Did you hit the dance floor first?
Right when I got there, I ran straight to the middle of the dance floor and just started to dance. Every time we're at a dance you know me and my friends go pretty crazy. Me and [my friend] Tony love dancing, so it's fun.
Did your parents give you a curfew?
No that's the one thing I got off. I got off my curfew for that night because I was staying at my friend's house.
Did they give you curfews in the past?
Yea, I still have a 12 o' clock curfew.
Did you get your date a corsage or something special?
I did not actually because she made the corsages herself out of money. It was unique and I've never seen it done before. But she took like a 20 dollar bill, a five, and a bunch of ones and made them all look like flowers and that's what we wore. We wore money as our corsages. It was sick.
When you think back on your prom say 15 years from now, what is going to be a memory that you never forget?
Being able to hang out with the seniors that were leaving. I was really good friends with a lot of people that were older than me and all the seniors that I went to the prom with were some of my best friends. They all went off to college in different states and that was the last real time I got to hang out with them so it was cool.
